Discover the Past

It’s been a busy week. Mission Control’s been buzzing with all the Facebooking and cartooning and such going on. I finally made it back down to the basement storage rooms here at the Strang Institute. Last week I posted a few pages from a 1970’s instruction manual for the Institute’s Time Tyke 2100 time machine that was marketed to kids back then. This was a smaller version of the adult-sized Time Master. Well here’s a poster from (I think) the late 80’s or early 90’s for the Time Tyke. I found a stack of them, but this was the best looking of the bunch. The rest were torn or water damaged.

Marooned in the Mail

I opened up the mail box today to find Tom Dell’Aringa’s latest volume of his comic Marooned, titled Mars Wars.

Marooned has become one of my favorite destinations for fun sci-fi comics. Full of great characters that you really get to like, who mature as the story goes on — it’s not just a gag-a-day. The book is beautiful too. Not only does it contain several full stories from the website, but it also has original, never-seen-before comics, plus lots of extras like behind the scenes sketches, annotations, and pin-ups by other notable cartoonists. The first edition is sold out, but Tom’s going to be printing a smaller version with just the basics (and a few extras).

I owe Tom a big bunch of thanks for helping me get the word out on Ellie on Planet X too. So please, please, please go check out this wonderful comic!

Oh, yeah…! And look what he drew on the inside of my copy! Awesome goodness!

Tyler Niccum’s “Hinterlife”

by Mission Control on January 10, 2011 at 8:13 pm

A little over a year ago I was approached by artist/writer Tyler Niccum to do the colors for his impressive 250 page graphic novel Hinterlife. He’d seen some of my art on the Flight Comics forums and thought our art styles would be a good fit. I’d seen his work on there as well and thought the same. Hinterlife is  autobiographical in nature, covering Tyler’s decision to leave his home and best friend behind to ride the rails as a vagabond. It’s full of  insights into friendship, love, and personal tragedy. He’s one prolific writer and artist — it was all I could do to keep up. You can download the whole thing right here for free! Find the rest of Tyler Niccum’s work at thedeafguy.com.

Just a little note: I added an archive to the menu at the top to make it easier for everyone to find older comics. Oh, let’s be honest.  It’s to make it easier for me to find older comics. 😀
