I know, I know, I know . . .
This last weekend was a blast at Kids Read Comics in Ann Arbor, Michigan. So much so that I didn’t get a chance to get back to Mission Control to upload Ellie’s latest transmission in time. I mean, it’s not as if you aren’t all waiting to find out if Muffin ever figures out how to get her working properly again, right?
So I’ll be back at the Strang Institute tomorrow and Ellie’s latest will be up Tuesday morning. In the meantime, here are a few pics of some of the sketchcards I did at Kids Read Comics. Enjoy, and see you tomorrow!
Meeting you and getting a sketched comic really made my nephews day! Great event!!
My nephew loves your strip and was thrilled meeting you again. Thanks for all the time you spent on him.
Cool sketches, Jim. Wish I coulda made the trip.

Thanks, everyone. I had a blast and met all kinds of cool and talented people. A lot of them seemed to be twelve year old kids with amazing powers dripping out of their pencils.
What did you use as a medium for these drawings?
I used gouache, CJ. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a water based paint. Kind of the consistency of poster paint, but the colors are much brighter and it’s far more versatile. I’m just starting to learn to use it.
Yep, I’ve been just learning to use it for the past year…sometimes hard to get the right consistency when mixing, but your colors are so smooth!
I was adding water to get the consistency of…egg yolk? Melted ice cream? I assure you they look a lot smoother in photos than in real life.
you’re too modest…
Here’s one of my gouache projects…it was an experiment on the different color wheel color classifications.

Your colors look pretty flat in those. I did a similar assignment way back in school and everything was all lumpy and muddy. I think when I did the cards I just pretended I was doing my strip (which is all digital) and just didn’t get fiddly with it. It seems that once you start trying to do that is when it becomes a mess.
Yeah, it was color theory…it’s supposed to be a flat graphic…only shapes, no lines, forming a face…still haven’t learned to love gouache yet.
Check out tinykittenteeth.com. It’s done completely in gouache. Of course, it’s so good it nearly prompted me to never pick up a brush again.
Crazy!
