I have to admit that I never “hear” any particular voice in my head for any of the characters. Although, if I had to pick, I’d say Ellie might sound a bit like Ed from Cowboy Bebop (to whom she might bear a slight resemblance).
Wait a minute, Ellie is moving the rocks?!? They’re supposed to be points of reference! How is she going to find her way across the barren Martian wasteland now?
That Ellie…
Even when you program them I guess you can never be completely sure what they’re going to do when they’re eight light years from home.
All of Mission Control freaked when, upon her first few days on the planet, Ellie suddenly stated she thought rocks were boring (at least in comparison to finding life). She was clearly coming close to violating one of her mission objectives. Good thing she’s back on track. Must’ve been a programming glitch.
Ellie’s “training” was pretty hands on, from what I understand. Her geology programming was headed up by Dr. Zahi Sharif, but I don’t know much more than that. In my spare time, I’ll look to see what kind of info there is about what went into Ellie’s preparation for her trip.
Nope, not at all! It’s just a coincidence that the rocks Ellie has mentioned so far each have two names. In fact, there’s thousands that she’s named. We’ve only seen a few.
Here’s a VERY partial list of some of the other rocks:
Top Hat, Melvis, Step Stool, June Bug, Kraven, Loki, Shoe Box, Kevin, Slippery Sal, Pizza Pie, Kitten, Lottsy Apso, Sun Dial, Horace, Jackpot Bear, Penfold, Maggie Mae, Ten Gallon Hat, The Skipper, Archie, Tiger Tom, Fort Knox, Alice, Montgomery, Certs, Froot Loop, Fonzie, Spridal, Murph, Scratchy McScratch Scratch, Beetle Boy, Puck, Circus Peanut, Little Chocolate Drop, Cricket, Stinky, Splinky, Hercules, Mossy, Cool Hand Luke, Table Top, Huckleberry Hound, Criswell, Jehoshaphat, Flat Iron, Duckie, Tyke, Brucie, Jeeves, Pencil Box, Woodchuck, Little Peanut, Tipper, Charlie Bird, Cereal Bowl, Masked Avenger, Cabbage Head, Frogmouth, Silly Bill, Washington Monument, So-Long, Katydid, Quincy, Raul, Candy Man, Bill Murray, Mrs. Jefferson, Maid Marion, and Moe.
Thanks Frank, that means a lot, coming from you and the wonderful work you do. I try (sometimes not hard enough, I think). It’s something I have to work at as it doesn’t come easy.
I hear Ellie in panel two with a valley girl voice 🙂
So long as she doesn’t start doing this, I’m good
Nobody wants to hear that, Frank. 😀

So I wasn’t that wrong

…oh, right

Hmmm…. were there any rock-collecting nerds in her training videos?

Her data file says she watched “countless television reruns during her thirty year trip.”
So, do all the rocks get two names, or did she just run out of one-name names?

Okay, now I wanna see the one named Loki!
Your drawings are so wonderful and appealing that it brings so much to their voice. Their personalities really come through in the work.

Love the whimsical line work and character designs. The limited color palette rocks as well. Great strip!
Much thanks, Mark!
