It’s Almost Kids Read Comics Time Again

The Strang Institute is closed today for Memorial Day here in the U.S.A. – which is why there wasn’t a new installment from Ellie this morning. She’ll be back on Thursday this week. Meanwhile, I wanted to share a few things going on for Kids Read Comics, an upcoming comic event at the Ann Arbor District Library on June 22 and 23. I’ll be representing Mission Control there and will have a few things Ellie related to sell, like comics, buttons, and prints. Right now this will be the only place to get your Ellie swag (until the Institute gets an online gift shop set up).

First, here’s the bookmark I designed, featuring a new interpretation of this event in Ellie history:

Next, I’m putting together a little manga-sized sketchbook inspired by the cool sketchbooks that Chris Sanders does. Hopefully these will be ready on time as I’m still finishing it up. Here’s a spread of Ellie related stuff, but there’ll be a whole variety of fun things to look at inside.

Finally, I made up this fancy banner to hang behind the booth!

Lastly, don’t forget! You can still have your kids vote for Ellie On Planet X for Favorite Webcomic at the Kids’ Comics Revolution Awards! The winners will be announced after the Kids Read Comics event next month!

Thanks for reading and Ellie will be back on Thursday!

Clear as Mud

One of the problems that befalls me because I’m working digitally is that I have the ability to zoom in really close to my work. And sometimes I get too caught up in the details. And sometimes those details don’t look so clear when you zoom way back out. Such is the case with today’s strip.

So here are some close-ups of a few overly detailed parts of the strip, plus the sketch from the last panel where I liked how Mr. Wallowmuck looked, but sorta lost his form under all of that mud.

Kirk and Lincoln – Tag-Team Champs!

We’ve been watching a lot of Star Trek lately here at Mission Control. Last week we all headed out on a field trip to see the new movie and that prompted us to go back and watch a bunch of the best from the original series, including the awesome one where Kirk and Spock team up with Lincoln and Sarak to beat the baddies.

The Comic Creators Mini-Group I belong to has a weekly sketch challenge and this one nicely coincided with all that. Here’s my contribution below, and see a ton more amazing Trek art at the Mini-Group Tumblr.

It’s a Major Award!

Here’s a nice surprise! Everyone at Mission Control just found out that Ellie On Planet X is nominated for the Kids’ Comics Revolution 2013 Awards in the category of Favorite Webcomic!

From the website:

“KCR hosts Dave Roman and Jerzy Drozd have teamed up with Chris Duffy (Nickelodeon Magazine) and the Ann Arbor District Library to honor some of the best kids’ comics to come out in 2012. You can vote by picking up a ballot in the Novella Room (2nd floor, Toronto Reference Library) at the Toronto Comics Arts Festival and Kids Read Comics, or use the online ballot below. Winners will be announced June 23rd at a special ceremony at the conclusion of Kids Read Comics in Ann Arbor, Michigan!”

We’re really excited! We’ve never been up for an award before. And we’ve got some awesome comic friends included in the category too, like Nemu-Nemu, Nedroid, My Sister the Freak, and Cucumber Quest! It’s a big deal just to get nominated!

If you’re a kid and Ellie is your favorite webcomic, go to the Kids’ Comics Revolution website, download the ballot and give us a vote! Thanks ahead of time!

I still have a few exclamation points left over, so here they are:!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!   !!! !!    !!!!! !   !
