Ode To Curiosity

by Mission Control on August 7, 2012 at 12:21 am
Posted In: Blog

I stayed up late last night, or was it this morning, to watch the live coverage of the latest rover to land on Mars, Curiosity! Cheers went up every few minutes from NASA/JPL Mission Control for each step in Curiosity’s descent to the surface. Once down, it wasn’t long before we were receiving the first photos from the rover’s landing site in Gale Crater.

As an ode to Curiosity, here’s one of Ellie’s first photos of the surface of Planet X, shortly after she remembered to take her lens caps off!

We showed you a sketch of Ellie’s satellite, Opie, the other day. Now here’s Opie’s pic of Planet X’s natural satellites. This is another part of this project.

Meet Opie

Here’s a quick sketch of Ellie’s Orbital Platform, or O.P. for short. But the crew here at Mission Control just call our bus-sized satellite Opie. He doesn’t say much, but he’s got the important job of relaying signals back and forth between Ellie and Earth, as well as forecasting weather, guiding Ellie on the safest path (though she doesn’t always take it), and taking fantastic high detail photos of the planet’s surface. You can see him represented in the Mission Control hologram map of Planet X in this pic here.
