Make Your Own Ellie!

It’s craft time everybody! Get out your scissors and glue (and glitter too, if you must) and you too can have your very own Ellie on Planet X Papercraft Figurine of Action!

Just download the pdf file of the pattern and directions (right HERE), print it out (preferably on card stock, although regular paper will work too), and follow the instructions to make your very own Ellie. You’ll be exploring extra-solar planets in no time!

A special shout out goes to Diana Stoneman, creator of the web comic Sweet and Sour Grapes. She developed the amazing papercraft pattern we used for our Ellie version. Go and visit her beautifully drawn, fantastically colored, and wonderfully written comic and tell her how awesome she is. Thanks Diana!

The Bad Egg

While surfing ’round the internet I happened upon this story from the land of my Viking ancestors by illustrator Emily Ryan.

The Story of the Bad Egg revolves around a prince who makes the attempt at raising four young dragon girls who are orphaned when he slays their mother. The story meanders a bit, but ultimately finds its message in the power of words over the forces of destruction.

The illustrations are beautiful in black and white and have an art deco inspired look that reminds me of the artist Erté. Go have a look. It’s free!

A Little Site Update

We’ve made a couple of little changes to the menu at the top that’ll hopefully bring you some more Ellie joy to your life. First, to save some space, the old Mission and Data Files links have been combined under the new Mission link.

We’ve also added a new link called Extra! Extra! that will collect all of the fun extra stuff that appears in the blog from time to time in one spot. You’ll find the Dance-O-Scope, stuff about Ellie and the Strang Institute, fan art, and even links to some interviews and reviews of our little family friendly comic. Plus you’ll also find a few link banners which you can use on your own website or blog to help promote Ellie.

Thanks and look for more fun coming up!

Poor Dental Hygiene Pays Off

No, not really. But I’ve been genetically cursed with some nasty bacteria that like to punch holes in my teeth no matter how much I brush or floss or gargle or scrape or whatever. So I’ve spent my fair share of time in the dentist chair, under the drill.

It all paid off today as I have been chosen to be Patient of the Month in my dentist’s July email letter. They let me say pretty much whatever I wanted so I wrote mostly about Ellie on Planet X and included a few comics as well, along with a photo I took with my phone of my teeth being excavated (which, due to vanity, I will not re-post here).

So, If you found your way here via your dentist’s email, welcome! And thank you Doc for keeping my smile bright and white!

Silly Old Bear

BibliOdyssey is a blog I visit from time to time to view beautiful pages from books of the past, maps, natural history prints, and other good things. I was going through the archives and ran accross a post of original Winnie The Pooh drawings by E.H. Shepard.

I had always thought Pooh held a place kind of at the periphery of those things that inspire me. However, these images have become so ingrained into my head over the years that I can’t help but believe they’ve woven their way into my drawings more than I realize. I love Shepard’s scratchy pen lines and his interpretations of Pooh and friends are so simple and iconic.

And, of course, Pooh represents all that is simple and good in the world. “It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn’t use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like “What about lunch?”
